Prioritizing Your Eye Health
First Optometry is committed to protecting your vision with proactive and preventive eye care. Your eye health is more than just checking your vision. Many eye diseases and conditions don’t show early warning signs, so regular eye exams are essential.
During your comprehensive exam, we’ll also discuss any new eye concerns. Presbyopia (the inability to focus on up-close objects) commonly shows symptoms in your early to mid-40s.
If you experience dry eyes or discomfort while using digital devices, we’ll help you manage your symptoms. Book your exam with our friendly team today to keep your vision clear and your eyes comfortable!

How Often Do I Need an Eye Exam?
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends eye exams every 2 years for adults. If you’re over 65, annual eye exams are recommended. During your comprehensive exam, we’ll assess your vision, update your prescription, and check for eye conditions and diseases.
If you wear contacts, we’ll schedule you for a separate contact lens exam and fitting.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?
Every patient is unique, and we want to get to know you. Providing personalized care to support your long-term vision health is our priority. During your eye exam, we’ll:
- Review your medical and visual history
- Take noninvasive pictures of the inside of your eye (to detect any eye diseases)
- Discuss any vision changes and needs (for work and recreation)
- Examine your visual acuity (sharpness of your vision)
- Update your prescription
- Screen for conditions like dry eye

Presbyopia & Your 40s
As you enter your 40s, you may notice changes in your vision, even if you’ve never needed glasses or contacts before. Presbyopia is a natural and common condition caused by changes in the lens of the eye that typically starts affecting people in their early to mid-40s.
The first signs of presbyopia often include difficulty reading small print or seeing clearly in low light. As the condition progresses, you might find it harder to read at arm’s length or experience eye strain when reading up close. Fortunately, presbyopia can be easily corrected with the right prescription.
During your regular eye exam, we can assess whether presbyopia is affecting your vision. We’ll also help you find the right prescription to meet your needs, which may differ from your everyday glasses or contacts, promoting comfort and a life free from digital eye strain.
